Understanding the Client’s Vision
Through early conversations, four priorities emerged.
A native Australian timber
The owner wanted the flooring to feel grounded in place. We singled out Blackbutt early because its pale, honeyed tones complement coastal architecture without overwhelming it. It sits within our Australian timber range, alongside spotted gum and other native species.
A calm and consistent look
The client had a strong preference for uniformity, meaning a floor that reads as a gentle, uninterrupted canvas rather than a surface with dramatic variation or banding.
A satin finish to soften sunlight
Given the home’s orientation toward strong natural light, sheen level mattered. High gloss would introduce glare and matte would feel too flat. Satin provided the balance between softness and sophistication.
Long-term durability
With regular foot traffic and a bayside climate prone to humidity shifts, the client needed stability, longevity and a product capable of remaining visually consistent across seasonal change.
Product Selection: Why Engineered Blackbutt Was Ideal
Authentic native character
Blackbutt carries the quintessential Australian blond palette. Warm but understated, fresh but not stark. Its gentle honey undertones harmonise with coastal and modern interiors, creating continuity between natural light, architectural elements and internal flow.
Naturally consistent grain
Compared to more strongly figured species such as spotted gum, Blackbutt offers:
- Reduced colour banding
- A soft, linear grain
- Minimal knots or dramatic pattern shifts
This allowed the flooring to act as a serene backdrop rather than a focal point competing with other design elements.
Engineered stability for varied climates
Engineered boards outperform solid timber in environments where moisture and temperature fluctuate. Their layered construction resists warping, cupping and expansion, which matters in a bayside home.

Paired with a satin finish, the Blackbutt achieved:

Installation: Direct-Stick for Precision and Performance
For this Hampton house we used a direct-stick installation, widely regarded as the premium standard for engineered timber. The method anchors each board directly to the subfloor with a high-performance Bostik adhesive. Beyond simply fixing the boards, it changes how the floor performs over its lifetime. Why direct-stick was the right choice
Enhanced structural stability. Direct-stick eliminates the air gap found in floating systems, significantly reducing deflection and movement. The result is a firmer underfoot feel and less risk of hollow sounds, flexing or excessive board movement over time.
Improved acoustic behaviour. When boards are fully adhered, sound is absorbed and dispersed more efficiently across the surface. That means quieter footsteps and less noise transfer between rooms, which matters in homes with interconnected living areas or multiple levels.
Greater longevity and refinishing options. A direct-stick system allows for more comprehensive future sanding than a floating installation, where system constraints can limit what is possible. The homeowner can sand the floor when needed, extending the life of the investment.
Compatibility with engineered construction. Engineered boards are designed for dimensional stability. Adhered directly, they hold tighter tolerances and more consistent performance across seasonal variation. The adhesive bond also reinforces the multi-layered structure, helping boards stay flat and aligned.
Subfloor preparation
Engineered timber only performs to its potential on a surface meeting the required tolerances for levelness, dryness and structural reliability. Before installation, our team carried out:
- Moisture testing to confirm the subfloor met industry conditions for adhesive installation
- Levelness checks to identify variances requiring grinding or patching
- Surface integrity evaluation to detect areas needing strengthening or priming
- Planning of movement joints and transitions to maintain consistency across room boundaries
